On the road, Roy calls in to the office

Roy Hetton dialed slowly and deliberately. It had been his practice for years now to do everything slowly and deliberately. There were untold benefits in causing others to wait.
Three rings, and then: “Mr. Hetton's office.”

“Hi, Agnes,” he said. “Roy here. I'm still at the Villanova branch. Any messages for me?”

“Grant's secretary called twice about the employee year end reviews. He wants to talk with you at your earliest convenience.”

“Thrilling. Anything else?”

“Diana Fensby – this is an odd one.”

He laughed. “She is an odd one. What's up?”

“Well, she called just a little while ago and asked for you, and when I told her you were out of the office, she said she was canceling her meeting with you this afternoon.”

“What meeting? I haven’t scheduled a meeting with her.” That doesn't sound good, he thought. What the hell is she up to this time?

“I asked her about that, and she got more snippy, said she refused to deal with you and asked for your supervisor's name.”

“Another satisfied customer! Did you put her through to Grant?”

“No, she said she was too upset. But, Roy, she also suggested that you’ve been having secret meetings with her of a romantic nature, and then she hung up on me.”

“Romantic? She is absolutely nuts! Can you imagine meeting with her any more than you have to? Good luck to Grant! I’d be thrilled to get rid of that nut case. Anyone else want my head?”

“Not yet. Maybe later!”

You could always count on Agnes to lighten things up; they’d put in a lot of years together. “Not if I can help it!” He laughed. “Thanks a lot, Agnes, and good bye.”

Poor Diana, he thought. Thinks she has me quivering with fear. It was a nice interlude She was a beauty; he had to give her credit for that. But beauty only gets you so far. Money gets you further, if you know how to handle it.

Well, fill up the gas tank and hit the safe deposit boxes.
